Effects of Calcium Ions on Protection of Pollen Injury Induced by Ultraviolet Irradiation

Abstract
Protective action of calcium ions was studied in relation to ultraviolet-light induced injury or reduction in growth of both Crinum asiaticum and Ornithogalum virens pollen when cultured in an artificial medium.
The experimental evidences have shown that calcium ions can either reduce ultraviolet (UV) induced injury or reduction in growth of pollen cells.
The protection by calcium during the physical inhibition taking place is explained on the basis of its ability to form an autocomplex with pectins in the primary cell wall of pollen tubes which in turn provide more rigid and protective membrane against the UV injuries as in the case of the chemical inhibitors reported previously.
